Six Summer Suggestions

Summer is the best time for reading (especially for those of us still in school). Free time and weather that allows us to be outside makes for prime reading opportunities. Stack some pillows or tie up a hammock, bring out a good book and you’re set. However, it is very easy for books not to fit your summer mood. You can also be left in a slump, starting book after book but never finishing. Having been through both of those (terribly horrendous) situations I have a few recommendations on what to read this summer!

Anything by Rick Riordan

I know that his books may seem to young for older readers. Children’s books in the children’s section but you will not regret picking up any of his books. Not only will you learn something while turning the pages but find yourself laughing along the way. His characters are upbeat and hilariously sarcastic in every situation. Plus the added bonus of his books being based upon different mythological stories.

Just One Day duology by Gayle Forman

This duology is a fast read, perfect for ending a slump. Haven’t read/finished a book in weeks or months? Pick this up. The story starts in the summer (thus helping fit that summertime mood) and takes you through the year back again to summer. It’s full of fluffy moments, traveling, and a road to self-discovery. All centering around a once in a lifetime shot at true love. The first book shows you one side of the year-long story, the second book the other side. Inklings of close coincidences will leave you aching to know the end and before you know it your reading slump is gone.

Flame in the Mist duology by Renée Ahdieh

Renée Ahdieh could right about a beetle gathering dung and I would swear that it was the most artful book ever written. Although The Wrath and the Dawn duology was magnificent I’d save it for cooler months. Flame in the Mist was created for summer. Each word leaves you craving the next to only see what will happen next. She artfully weaves in subplots that leave you scrambling to get to the next chapter, as well as character development that will make your toes curl. Based in ancient Japan you won’t miss the modern world as you fight next to samurai and learn the secrets of the Emperor’s court. I mean summer leaves room for distractions to take a hold of your mind.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Geekerella revolves around a teenager trying to connect with her now deceased parents. Her previous connection, in life, was through Starfield (think Star Trek/Star Wars). Continuing along that path Elle wants to win the cosplay competition at the convention her father started. A mysterious text from someone trying to contact him leads her to create new friendships, and dare herself to take life her life on her own path. This is a feel good, lovey-dovey book, that I read in one day. It will not only end your slump but inspire you to follow what you love.

Poem books by Rupi Kaur

They are so deep, but so absolutely easy to comprehend. You will finish it in an hour. It’s a calming brain break that makes you think. Plus they are just beautiful so you won’t regret adding them to your shelves. ; )

Brazen by Pénélope Bagieu

I cannot say enough about this book. First, it’s a beautifully illustrated graphic novel. Second, its all about bomb ass women throughout history from across the world. Third, it is either short stories or shortens their life to highlights of important things they accomplished. Most of the women I hadn’t even heard of before. It’s gorgeous, it’s inspiring, and it’s liberating to read about fellow women that changed the world. Many even changed how women are perceived.
